As diocesan bishop, he has responsibility for one of the Church of England's largest dioceses, leading an episcopal team with the Bishops of Wolverhampton, Stafford and Shrewsbury. He has a long-held interest and expertise in ecumenical and inter-faith matters, work for which he was awarded the OBE in 2012. |

The Rt Revd Paul ThomasBishop of OswestryThe new See of Oswestry belongs to a suffragan bishop acting as a Provincial Episcopal Visitor, ministering principally to Catholic tradition parishes and clergy in the western part of Province of Canterbury for whom, under the House of Bishops Declaration on the ministry of Bishops and Priests 2014, he serves as ‘the bishop asked to provide oversight’. This replaces the former Bishop of Ebbsfleet. The first Bishop of Oswestry is Fr Paul Thomas who was consecrated at Canterbury Cathedral on 2 Feb 2023. |
Assistant Bishops also share in the episcopal ministry in the dioces, supporting the Diocesan and Area bishops in ad hoc ways: they include retired bishops and those with other roles.

The Registry provides legal advice to the Bishop and senior clergy and to the diocese and its Synod and Board of Finance; they also advise parishes, their clergy and lay officers.
They also facilitate the work of the Consitory Court, dealing with public applications for example in relation to burials and memorials, and also Faculty Jurisdiction - effectively 'planning permission' for church buildings.

We have a Diocesan Safeguarding Team working together to cover all areas of Safeguarding and their work is overseen by the Diocesan Safeguarding Panel which meets quarterly, with an independent chair.
