Bishop of Lichfield

Bishop Michael was enthroned as the 99th Bishop of Lichfield in 2016.

As diocesan bishop, he has responsibility for one of the Church of England's largest dioceses, leading an episcopal team with the Bishops of Wolverhampton, Stafford and Shrewsbury.

He has a long-held interest and expertise in ecumenical and inter-faith matters, work for which he was awarded the OBE in 2012.

Bishop of Oswestry

The new See of Oswestry belongs to a suffragan bishop acting as a Provincial Episcopal Visitor, ministering principally to Catholic tradition parishes and clergy in the western part of Province of Canterbury for whom, under the House of Bishops Declaration on the ministry of Bishops and Priests 2014, he serves as ‘the bishop asked to provide oversight’. 

This replaces the former Bishop of Ebbsfleet. The first Bishop of Oswestry is Fr Paul Thomas who was consecrated at Canterbury Cathedral on 2 Feb 2023.

Assistant Bishops also share in the episcopal ministry in the dioces, supporting the Diocesan and Area bishops in ad hoc ways: they include retired bishops and those with other roles.

The Archdeaconry of Salop, covers the same ground as the Shrewsbury Episcopal Area (overseen by the Bishop of Shrewsbury). For historic reasons, Shropshire is overseen by the Dioceses of Lichfield (in the north) and Hereford (the south). The boundary roughly falls on a north-west to south-east line from Llanyblodwel on the Welsh border to Badger on the Staffordshire border, including Shrewsbury and most of Telford.

Adviser among the Deaf Community

Susan became the first Deaf Baptist Minister in September 2016. Susan holds three roles: Minister at Rising Brook Baptist Church leading Open Hands Signing Church; advisor within the Heart of England Baptist Association; and as an Advisor amongst the Deaf community with Lichfield Diocese.

Registry

The Registry provides legal advice to the Bishop and senior clergy and to the diocese and its Synod and Board of Finance; they also advise parishes, their clergy and lay officers.

They also facilitate the work of the Consitory Court, dealing with public applications for example in relation to burials and memorials, and also Faculty Jurisdiction - effectively 'planning permission' for church buildings.

Safeguarding

Director of Ministry

Jeanette has overall responsibility for the Vocations & Training Team.  The team incorporates: Lay training (including Reader training), Curate training, licensing and ordination, continuing ministerial development (CMD), ministry development review (MDR) and clergy wellbeing.

She also oversees the Team as they aim to encourage people across the diocese to think about, and discover, their vocation.

Bishops’ Director of Ordinands / aka BDO

Romita has the responsibility for encouraging and nurturing vocations to ordained ministry. She is also responsible for establishing and implementing ordination strategies in the diocese. Romita also oversees the team of Assistant Directors of Ordinands.

Local Ministry and Learning Platform Officer

Chris's role is to support and equip personal discipleship, ministry and mission at the local level within the diocese through the ongoing development and creation of learning resources available on the diocesan learning hub, the Lichfield Learning Platform.
