The baptism of Prince George

Published: 23rd October 2013

The Bishop of Lichfield, Rt Revd Jonathan Gledhill, says of today's royal Christening:

The delight at the christening of a royal baby is making a big splash across the world. Prince George clearly has many expectations laid on him, including one day becoming Defender of the Faith. The best bit is that any baby can be christened in the Church of England whatever the shape of the family.

It is a wonderful opportunity to celebrate the arrival of new life and remember that among the weariness of nappies and sleepless nights, parents, godparents, family and church are sharing in the delight of nurturing not just biological life but a spiritual being who we pray will one day grow into a faith of his own.

As Prince George is baptised today, please join us in praying for him and his parents.

Prayer for HRH Prince George

We thank almighty God for the gift of new life.

May God the Father, who has received you by baptism into his Church,

pour upon you the riches of his grace,

that within the company of Christ's pilgrim people

you may daily be renewed by his anointing Spirit,

and come to the inheritance of the saints in glory.

Amen.

Prayer for the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge

Faithful and loving God,

bless those who care for these children

and grant them your gifts of love, wisdom and faith.

Pour upon them your healing and reconciling love,

and protect their home from all evil.

Fill them with the light of your presence

and establish them in the joy of your kingdom,

through Jesus Christ our Lord

Amen.
