Stoke Churches’ Revitalisation Takes a Major Step Forward

The Church of England has confirmed the remaining £3.7 million towards a £5.9 million investment to strengthen Christian presence across Stoke‑upon‑Trent through its churches, schools, and community partnerships. Funding runs until 2032 and builds on work already making a real difference locally.

The Encounter Project

Work is already underway in three communities – Hanley, Bucknall and Trent Vale –through The Encounter Project, which connects churches, schools, families and children. The project is creating welcoming spaces where people can belong, learn, have fun and explore faith together.

Recent activities include:

  • Intergenerational worship in schools and churches
  • Lunchtime and after‑school Bible clubs
  • Holiday clubs offering much‑needed activities for local families
  • Parent and carer cafés
  • Safe, friendly spaces for children and young people

Many children taking part come from disadvantaged or diverse backgrounds, and schools report that Encounter is having a “remarkable and transformative impact” within the community. Parents and children have expressed how much they value the care, fun and support provided.

The project is led by Alex Wolvers, appointed in 2025, and will expand to six more locations over the coming years.

All Saints, Hanley

At the same time, All Saints, Hanley is being renewed as a hub for work with young adults, students, families and the wider parish. Newly appointed Vicar Revd Alan Gault is already developing partnerships with the local Sixth Form College and University Chaplaincy.

Funding will also support essential improvements to the church and hall, giving this beautiful Arts and Crafts building a new lease of life so that future ministry can flourish.

Looking Ahead

The Venerable Dr Megan Smith, Archdeacon of Stoke‑upon‑Trent, says the early signs are encouraging:

“It is our hope that these projects together will give communities in Stoke a new opportunity to discover the fullness of life offered in the gospel – and we are already seeing that begin.”
