Panel at the inaugural Lichfield Diocese Safeguarding Conference in 2025

Creating safe, trusted and loving communities for all.

Safeguarding is at the heart of discipleship, mission and governance. It is not a regulatory burden but an expression of our calling to protect the vulnerable, honour each person’s dignity and create communities of trust.

As Seeking the Kingdom affirms, following Jesus means caring for and safeguarding the wellbeing of all people.

'Speak out on behalf of the voiceless, and for the rights of all who are vulnerable,'
Proverbs 31:8

Our Safeguarding Strategy Commitments
1 Strong independent oversight

The governance framework includes:

  • Lichfield Diocese Safeguarding Scrutiny Panel (LDSSP)
  • Diocesan Safeguarding Operations Group (DSOG)

These bodies ensure robust scrutiny, accountability and continuous improvement.

2 Safe practice across all ministries

We will ensure best‑practice safeguarding is embedded in:

  • Parishes
  • Schools
  • Chaplaincies
  • Fresh expressions
  • The cathedral

Safe spaces enable discipleship to flourish.

3 Training support and clarity

We will:

  • Offer clear guidance for all leaders
  • Strengthen safeguarding training
  • Ensure reporting and escalation pathways are well understood
  • Provide support for clergy, lay ministers and volunteers

Clarity and confidence keep people safe.

4. A culture of vigilance and care

Safeguarding is part of shaping a healthy culture. We will:

  • Embed safeguarding expectations into governance structures
  • Ensure every committee and project board understands its responsibilities
  • Use risk management processes to identify and address safeguarding issues early

Creating safe communities is a core expression of the gospel.
