Schools Committee
The Responsibilities of the Schools CommitteeThe Schools Committee is responsible to the Board for providing assistance, support and advice to church schools regarding religious education, spirituality and collective worship.
The Board delegates its powers under paragraph 6(1) of the Diocesan Boards of Education Measure 1991 to the Schools Committee. Specifically its responsibilities are:
- To develop a Christian understanding of education in relation to the school system in England.
- To advise the Board on education matters appropriate to its role and their application to church schools.
- To support and prioritise the work of the Schools' Advisers.
- To establish working parties to investigate and develop particular aspects of church schools.
- To support its officers and appoint and support other representatives in their role on Standing Advisory Councils for Religious Education (SACREs), or on any agreed Syllabus Conferences as may be established, within the diocese.
- To oversee the delivery of the Service Agreement Scheme
- To ensure that the Statutory Inspection of Anglican Schools framework is carried out in line with the established protocols.
- To oversee, on behalf of the Board, the process of appointing foundation governors to Church of England voluntary schools.
- To act as a bridge between schools and the church at parish, deanery and diocesan levels.
- To assist in the management of schools' projects sponsored by the Board of Education.
- To oversee the budget for the work of the Committee.
- To submit the minutes of its meetings to the Board for ratification.
- To invite an appropriate number of participant observers to assist in the Committee's deliberations.
Specific responsibilities of the Schools' Advisers through the Committee are:
- To fulfil the terms of the Service Agreement Scheme as regard the Advisors' role.
- To offer an advisory service on all aspects of religious education, collective worship and spirituality.
- To manage the Statatory Inspection of Anglican Schools (Section 48) service and support schools during and after the whole inspection process.
- To organise training on appropriate curricular matters for those concerned with education in church schools.
- To develop and maintain pastoral links with church schools.
- To provide support for Christian teachers within the diocese.
- To collaborate with those working within a similar field, in particular the local education authorities, the National Society and other dioceses and other bodies.
- To assist in governor training, when and where appropriate.
- To act as a support on links between schools and the church at parish, deanery and diocesan levels.
